What's Fun to Do in Austin, Texas?

There is still plenty of time left in the summer, which means plenty of opportunities to plan a visit to Austin, Texas! Tour the Capitol

The Capitol offers free guided tours, or you can do a self-guided tour with brochure, during business hours M-F, 7 a.m.-10 p.m., Sat/Sun, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

 

Take a Dip at Barton Springs Pool

An Austin hot-spot, this three-acre, 68 degree natural spring in the heart of Zilker Park is sure to cool you off on a hot summer day. The spring is also home to the endangered Barton Springs salamander, and includes an educational exhibit called “Splash!” where you can learn about the history of Barton Springs! Open April 26-October 31, 5 a.m.-10 p.m. daily, $1-$3 per person.

 

See the Congress Avenue Bridge/Austin Bats

Every summer night 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge  from their colony under the Congress Avenue Bridge and eat 10-20,000 pounds of insects. Bring a blanket and sit by the shore, or stand along the bridge and take in the sight with other Austinites.

 

Catch Some Live Music

Austin is the “Live Music Capital of the World”, and you can find live music any day of the week at places like Emo’s, Stubb’s, or The Moody Theatre! Austin is also home to many summer music festivals, including Austin City Limits and Fun Fun Fun Fest.

 

Visit Zilker Botanical Garden

This beautiful 26-acres of topography is located in downtown Austin at the center of Zilker Park, and is often called the “jewel in the heart of Austin”. Open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily, $1-$3 per person.

 

Stand-Up Paddle Board on Lady Bird Lake

An Austin favorite! Visit Rowing Dock or Texas Rowing Center and rent a stand-up paddle board for ~$15/hr. You can also rent a canoe or kayak. Take a friend and catch some rays out on Town Lake!

 

Have a Drink on Rainey Street

This historic district is home to many bungalow-style homes that have been renovated into businesses, bars and restaurants. This trendy section of Austin is one of our favorites, so be sure to stop by and grab a drink!

 

Graffiti Your Name on Castle Hill (aka HOPE Outdoor Gallery)

The HOPE Outdoor Gallery (HOG) is a three-story educational art project located at 11th & Baylor Streets in Austin – one of the largest outdoor galleries in the USA. Take a couple of cans of spray paint and create your own mural at this fantastic display!

 

Hike to the 360-Overlook (Pennybacker Bridge)

Located on Capital of Texas Highway (360), you can then take a short hike to the top, which overlooks Pennybacker Bridge and Lake Austin. This is a popular Austin spot for taking beautiful pictures or having a picnic. Hike near sunset to catch an even more magnificent view.

 

Catch a Round Rock Express Game

The Express are a triple-A team, affiliated with the Texas Rangers organization. Games are played at the state-of-the-art Dell Diamond, and provide a fun, family atmosphere. Catch a Friday game for fireworks after the last out!
